Cocker Spaniel Puppy Health Issues:
CLIPPING THE AMERICAN COCKER SPANIEL
The puppy's first clipping.
In this article is for the begining cocker owner.
It is to show how to do a puppy clip. There is no attempt to do anything
other than to get through it. Sometimes this is quite a challenge
for your first time.
This is a pet cocker clip. When you feel more
comfortable with clipping, you can start the work with thinning shears.
Which, by the way, is not covered in this particular article. That's
Remember to stay calm and talk with a gentle voice.
If the clipping starts to tire you or the puppy, STOP take it up later
in the day or tomorrow.
THE FIRST PUPPY CLIPPING
| To start this whole procedure, the very
first thing you would do is bathe the puppy. It makes clipping so
much easier. When I bathe, I also, clean the ears at the same time.
That way any of the ear cleaner that would happen to get on the coat is
After the bath and when the puppy is good and dry (you can hasten
this by blow drying) you brush the puppy thoroughly.
|I start with the ears. I use a very quite clipper
so not to scare the puppy. An A5 is a little loud. I use that clipper
when they get a little older. I start at the top of the ear and clip
down toward the bottom of the ear leather. Going about 1/3 of the way down
UNDER THE EAR
Next I clip under the ear. By holding the ear back against
his head, you can control the puppy a little better. They do sometimes
like to move around a lot. You just have to follow them (within reason).
This, also, helps you have more control over the clipper. I
clip the underside of the leather toward the ear canal. This makes
a clean cut. You do not have to be absolutely perfect the first few
times. It is more getting the puppy use to the clipper and grooming.
I talk to the puppy while I am doing this. Your voice has a calming
affect on the puppy.
EYES AND HEAD
|This is where you must be very careful.
Around the eyes. If the puppy is going to do much bouncing around it always
seems to be around the eyes. By maintaining the same hold as with
the ears, move the clipper foward toward his nose. Get as close as you
can to the eyes but be careful not to go over the top of them. Getting
real close can wait until the puppy is use to all of this. At this point,
I go between the eyes with the clipper, the same thing goes, don't worry
if it is not prefect.
TOP OF HEAD
|Next, I go over the top of the head.
I start at the top of the ear and clip up toward the top.
UNDER THE NECK
|Next I clip under the neck. I hold both
ears up out of the way. Start the clipper under the chin and clip
down the neck. I go to just where the breast bone is at and over
to the shoulder. I use this as a guide and go no further.
|After the head and neck are done, I start clipping
the back. At this age I do not try to thin the coat to get it to
lay nice. Puppy's attention span just does not warrant the time.
I start at the back of the head and clip toward the tail. I usually
clip one pass down the middle of the back and one pass down either side.
NOW THE TAIL
|he next step is the tail. I hold the
end of the tail and clip down toward the puppy's bottom. I than clip
under the tail to clean the area.
|I hold the end of the tail and clip toward
the end to get all the long hair off the tail.
|Here I try to clean up any of the mistakes
I made when the puppy moves.
|Here I am just cleaning up the neck line.
If the puppy is tired of staying still, you can by pass this for another
day. On a puppy, perfect not, practice yes.
|After I clip the puppy, I cut their toe nails.
I use just a regular toe nail clipper (human). I find that with a
puppy this is all I need.
|I next brush all the loose hair off the puppy
including their feet.
|I brush all the hair forward toward the toes,
front and back of the leg.
|The only scissoring I do on a puppy at this
age is on the feet. Not to get it to look perfect, just to accustom
the puppy to having this done. I do try to leave the hair in a smooth
curve around the foot. That is if the puppy will cooperate.
By now they could be just a wee bit tired of all this loving attention.
|I hold the puppy in the curve of my arm to
make them feel secure. I just take a little hair off.
DONE - SORT OF
|This is kind of what the puppy could look like
when you are done. One thing about this whole process is that any
mistakes - the hair does grow back rather fast.
|Well enough all ready. She may not be
perfect - but hey - it is okay.
If any of you are wondering just what kind of cocker this is, WELL,
she is a blue roan with ticking.
